Queenslander Andrew Dodt’s consistent play on the European Tour has been rewarded with a spot in The 146th Open at Royal Birkdale, the first Major appearance in his career.

Dodt sealed his berth alongside 11 Australians and two New Zealanders when three places were available in golf’s original championship through The Open Qualifying Series which continued at the Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open at Dundonald this week.

The 31-year-old started impressively with an opening round 67 followed by 69 in round two. He held ground in the third round with 71 when the Dundonald Links course was lashed with wild weather that played havoc with most of the field.

His final round was a frustrating 1-over 73 however he was able to hold his nerve to hole a four-foot putt for par on the 72nd hole to finish T4, Dodt’s higher World Ranking saw him seal the final spot on offer over England’s Anthony Wall.

“I’m absolutely pumped to be playing in my first major. It’s taken a while but I finally got there. Qualifying for The Open has been a motivation for the last six months. Today wasn’t easy at times but I’m in and here we go," Dodt said.

“I’m prepared for playing links golf, it was nice to have the Irish Open last week and then the Scottish Open. I played Royal Birkdale about 10 years ago, I don’t remember much but we’ll get out there tomorrow and do our homework.”

The two-time European Tour winner will make his major championship debut in England instead of holidaying in New York with his wife as previously planned.

Dodt joins Jason Day, Adam Scott, Scott Hend, Marc Leishman, Ashley Hall, Adam Bland, Ryan McCarthy, Cameron Smith, Aaron Baddeley and Mathew Griffin as well as New Zealand’s Michael Hendry and Ryan Fox.
