Is this Jason’s major Day? After a third round of 6-under 66 Jason Day will take a two shot lead into the final round of the PGA Championship.
One of Australia’s most consistent performers in the Majors,
Day has had nine top-10 finishes in the 19 Major Championships he has competed
in, but this could be his best opportunity of finally sealing that much coveted
victory.
"My confidence level is high,
but I’m just more enjoying just being out on the golf course, rather than in
previous positions that I’ve had in Major Championships, I’ve viewed them as
very stressful and kind of hard to go out and play the next day," said Day.
"But I’m enjoying myself so
much on the golf course. It’s been fun to be out here in pressure situations.
It’s good to be in contention, especially on Sunday. It’s good to have the
lead, so that’s a plus."
Playing with fellow Australian Matt Jones, Jason Day was a
man on a mission in the third round, zoned in and focused on the task at hand
he reeled off an eagle and eight birdies and fought back after each mistake on
course.
"Today was a good day. There
were some mistakes here and there, but overall I hit a lot of good quality iron
shots, hit a lot of great drives out there and drove the ball really well,"
said Day.
"So, one more day left. I’ve got to keep pushing
forward, keep grinding, keep doing the best I can do out there and see how it
goes tomorrow."
Day will now play in the final round with Jordan Spieth who
is an amazing 50-under across the four Major Championships this year.
"I’m really excited about
tomorrow. To me I’m looking at it as it’s going to be a really fun day. I can
only get better from this and it should be an exciting challenge playing
against Jordan."
Having a more adventurous time on course, second round
leader Matt Jones found himself in all sorts of places on the golf course
including a trip to the corporate hospitality tents at the 9th to
play his second shot.
While Jones’ round started out so promising a wayward driver
resulted in a round of 1-over 73. He now finds himself at 10-under the card,
tied 6th and five shots off the lead.
Jones will play with Dustin Johnson in the final round.
Cameron Smith played some brilliant golf early in his third
round, at one point finding himself inside the top-5 on the leaderboard.
However three dropped shots in his closing four holes moved him back down the
leaderboard.
Smith will now play alongside Scott Piercy in the final
round where he starts on 4-under the card and in a share of 30th
place.
