Jason Day’s upward trend has convinced experts that he is ready to break his winning drought at this week’s inaugural 3M Open on the PGA TOUR.

Day headlines a five-strong Australian contingent teeing it up at TPC Twin Cities in Minnesota, the first time the city has hosted a PGA TOUR event in almost half a century.

Joining Day in the field are Matt Jones, Curtis Luck, Cameron Davis and Rod Pampling with Kiwi Danny Lee hoping to further improve his current FedEx Cup ranking of 57th.

A top-10 finish in his last start and a renewed determination to return to the summit of world golf has experts believing that he is on the verge of a 13th PGA TOUR title.

PGA TOUR Fantasy Insider Rob Bolton has put Day on the top of his weekly Power Rankings while Golf Channel’s Will Gray puts Day as fourth favourite.

“Still after his first win in 14 months, but he’s connected for six top 10s, including a T8 in his last appearance at TPC River Highlands where he led the field in greens in regulation,” Bolton observed.

“The Aussie joined [Bryson] DeChambeau in tying for eighth two weeks ago in Connecticut, and he was T21 the week before that in his first event with Steve Williams on the bag,” writes Gray.

“While he hasn’t won on Tour since the Wells Fargo more than a year ago he appears on the verge of ending that drought sooner rather than later.”

While Day is fighting to return to the winner’s list the other four Aussies in the field are battling for a place in the FedEx Cup playoffs.

Jones is currently in 107th position and in need of some solid results to secure safe passage into week one while Luck (160th), Davis (164th) and Pampling (221st) all have their work cut out to force their way into the top 125 in the rankings.
