Steven Conran has overcome a four shot deficit, to take out the 2016
Australian Legends Tour Championship.
Conran’s final round 71, was good enough for a three under par total, to
hold off Brad Burns and Richard Backwell, who closed with the low round of the
day, a 3-under par 69.
Conran’s win was somewhat overshadowed by Peter Senior unfortunately
succumbing to the same hip injury which caused him to withdraw from the Emirates Australian
Open a few weeks ago and subsequently retiring from international golf.
With the discomfort clearly noticeable on the opening nine, Senior
fought hard for 11 holes, and although he was still leading at the time had to
call it quits when the pain became too apparent.
Oblivious to what was unfolding behind him, Conran remained consistent
with his only blemish on the back nine coming at the par-4 16th
hole which he immediately made back with a solid birdie on the par-3 17th
hole.
This is Conran’s first trip to Byron and he was pleasantly surprised
when he arrived for a practice round on Thursday.
"The course is in tremendous condition, and I really enjoyed the
challenges it presented throughout the week," said Conran.
"My strategy all week was just to stay out of trouble and thankfully it
paid off.
"It wasn’t until the 15th hole that I was notified of Peter
withdrawing from the event, and that is something you never like to see happen to a player.
"I have had some good fortune since entering the Legends Tour ranks with
two wins and two runner-up places, so it’s fantastic to secure a another win
here in Byron Bay."
Professionals will now make their way north with the Sunshine Coast Masters
closing out the 2016 E-Z-GO PGA Legends Tour for 2016. The opening round will tee off
at Noosa Golf Club on Tuesday, followed by Pelican Waters on Wednesday, with
Twin Waters closing out the three-round tournament on Thursday.
