Tour Insider: #AusOpenGolf

There are so many internationals and great local hopes that picking the winner will be a challenge but I think I might have the winner in my list of five.

I thought I was going to pinch it last week at the AVJennings NSW Open with Min Woo Lee but valiantly he fell just short.

However, there could not have been a more deserving winner in Josh Younger who I know is one of the best blokes going around.

As Tour Insider I’m looking forward to the Emirates Australian Open this week as it’s one of the deepest fields we have had in years.

There are so many internationals and great local hopes that picking the winner will be a challenge but I think I might have the winner in my list of five.

Without further delay, here are the Tour Insider’s selections for the #AusOpenGolf at The Australian Golf Club.

PAUL CASEY
Taking into account the long Australian Golf Club layout I can’t go past Paul Casey as a selection. Known for his ball striking and after another good year I’ll be shocked if he isn’t in the hunt. I did watch him go through the gears on the range and immediately knew he wasn’t here to make the numbers up. He’s here to win.

RYAN FOX
Inside sources say he has set winning the ISPS HANDA PGA Tour of Australasia Order of Merit as a goal for 2019 and to do so he must play well here. He hits it miles and most of the cross bunkers protecting the fairways aren’t even a thought for the big Kiwi. A few rumours also flying around he has eaten the players lounge out of food so like a good racehorse if they are eating well they are healthy.

ROD PAMPLING
I have to pick Rod this week just because his record at the Australian is too good not to. He finished second in 2014, shot the course record 61 in 2015 on his way to fourth place and many years back nearly won one. There is something about the course he must love and for that I’m going to back him to swing his form around.

CAM DAVIS
After a quiet first year on the PGA TOUR Cam managed to get his card back through the playoff system and comes back to where it all started. At the scene of his biggest win on tour yet, the vibes have to be good. He clearly has the game and nothing would be better than to see him win two in three years.

The final round of the 2019 AVJennings NSW Open is here and we are in for a thrilling final day of action at Twin Creeks Golf and Country Club.

Rising stars Min Woo Lee and Justin Warren lead the ISPS HANDA PGA Tour of Australasia tournament at 17-under the card with just 18 holes to play but with a stacked field threatening to strike the round will not be without its challenges.

Sitting just one shot behind at 16-under, round one leader Josh Younger and 2017 NT PGA Championship winner Travis Smyth are well and truly in contention and looking to capitalise on the final day.

With years of experience under his belt on both the Australasian and Asian Tour, 35-year-old Younger is hungry to claim his maiden tour victory this week.

Andrew Dodt shot even-par on moving day to remain at 14-under the card but with a win under his belt already in 2019, the ability to go low and the composure to match he can’t be discounted.

The winner of the AVJennings NSW Open will not only take home the lion’s share of the $400,000 prize purse but also World Golf Ranking Points and full exemption onto the ISPS HANDA PGA Tour of Australasia until the end of the 2020 season.

In addition, the top-10 players from the NSW tournament will also earn a place in the field at next week’s Emirates Australian Open.

The penultimate group of Jake Higginbottom, Dodt and Younger will take to the first tee at 10:45am following by front-runners Smyth, Lee and Warren at 10:55am.

After a record-breaking second round at the AVJennings NSW Open Andrew Dodt will tee it up alongside Min Woo Lee and Josh Younger on moving day at Twin Creeks Golf and Country Club.

The marquee group will tee off the first at 11:05am in a one-tee start for the field.

Starting with a 14-under two-round total, Dodt will look to capitalise early and make ground on a charging Lee who sits just one shot behind at 13-under.

Possible showers and thunderstorms may threaten to halt play later this afternoon however more hot, hazy, humid conditions are expected with a top of 33 degrees.

LEADERBOARD:
Andrew Dodt -14
Min Woo Lee -13
Josh Younger -11
Travis Smyth -10
Justin Warren -9

Asian Tour veteran David Gleeson will use the pain of a playoff defeat to launch a renewed 2020 schedule while Jason Scrivener has fired a bogey-free 7-under 65 to finish tied for 10th at the European Tour’s DP World Tour Championship finale in Dubai.

Tournament leader when the third round of the inaugural Sabah Masters was completed early Sunday morning, Gleeson fired a 3-under 68 in the final round to finish level with Pavit Tangkamolprasert, Aman Raj and Phachara Khongwatmai at 13-under par.

A chip-in birdie at the second playoff hole secured the victory for Tangkamolprasert, Gleeson’s tie for second his best result in eight years.

Joint leader after an opening round of 4-under 67 and playing in just his fifth Asian Tour event of the year, Gleeson hinted that he would be more active next year and is excited by how a more mature approach will translate on course.

“I think my game is better than it was back in the past,” Gleeson told the Asian Tour media.

“It’s more complete than back then. I played at a very high sort of emotional level back then. That’s what I have been working on, just to relax and enjoy the game.

“Better pre-shot routines are in place and more routines for the whole week are in place. That’s the goal coming to next year, so let’s keep doing this for, well, until seniors, I guess!

“I just really felt quite good today actually, just within myself, and what shots I was trying to hit. I was actually almost getting close to matching what I was seeing and feeling without sort of worrying about nerves, so you know, that’s a good sign.”

In a strong week for the Australian contingent Daniel Fox took another important step towards retaining his card for 2020 with a tie for eighth with Aaron Wilkin and Travis Smyth also among the top 20 finishers.

West Australian Jason Scrivener capitalised on his first visit to the European Tour’s DP World Tour Championship in Dubai with a stunning final round of 7-under 65 at the Jumeirah Golf Estates to finish tied for 10th.

In addition to moving him up 19 spots on the leaderboard, Scrivener’s result in Dubai saw him rise three places in the final Race to Dubai rankings, the best result of his career.

Queensland’s Brad Kennedy recorded his third top-10 finish in his past four starts on the Japan Golf Tour at a rain-shortened Dunlop Phoenix tournament in Miyazaki.

A 4-under 67 in the third round elevated Kennedy into the top 10 but he wasn’t given the opportunity to advance further on Sunday, organisers cancelling the fourth round and proclaiming Shugo Imahira the victor.

The Gippsland Super 6 has injected a sense of excitement into the ISPS HANDA PGA Tour of Australasia this week with a new format and new course.

Wild winds and heavy rain are expected to throw a spanner in the works for the 125-man field, however, with locals and legends alike set to tee it up at Yallourn Golf Club the inaugural trophy could belong to anyone come Sunday.

The Tour staff have their squeegees ready and the TI’s picks are prepared so let’s get this week underway.

MAVERICK ANTCLIFF
Mav is a multiple winner up in China this year and it’s great to see him back in Australia. He’s been working with PGA Professional Grant Field now for over a year and it’s paying dividends. I’m looking forward to seeing how he performs back home this summer, starting with the Gippsland Super 6.

MARCUS FRASER
I thought I was going to salute at the last event when I tipped Marcus at the Vic PGA but he ran into one better. None the less I’m giving him another crack. No explanation needed!

SCOTT STRANGE
After securing his Japanese card for 2020 I’m thinking Scott will be full of confidence. He’s had a rough trot of late with injuries but I reckon he’s back to his best. Watch this space. And the leaderboard at Yallourn.

TAYLOR MACDONALD
T-Mac has been putting up some good results up of late so I’m going to throw him in my picks. The Redcliffe export has all the ability in the world and another good result wouldn’t be a surprise. Let’s see if it’s the gold this time.

JAY MACKENZIE
Jay is a bit of a left-field pick here but he could be the straightest driver of the golf ball I’ve ever seen. The tightish country course will suit him and it would be great to see the young guy have a week out.

Adam White and Brendon Goddard chat with Women’s PGA Cup team captain Lisa Jean about the history-making tournament in Austin, Texas.

Geoff Ogilvy says this week’s Gippsland Super 6 is going to be unlike any other tournament he’s competed in.

Plus PGA Professional Craig Spence is back again with his top tip of the week.

Australia has finished fourth at the inaugural Women’s PGA Cup, as team USA took at the historic event.

Temperatures of just five degrees lashed the course at Omni Barton Creek Resort & Spa in Austin, Texas, which further hampered the Aussies’ chance of a last ditch revival.

The team, led by captain Lisa Jean, scored a team total of 715 – 44 off the first-placed US.

Great Britain & Ireland finished 10 strokes clear in third while Canada secured second spot. Sweden rounded out the field in fifth.

PGA of Australia Chief Executive Officer Gavin Kirkman said the tournament has been a resounding success.

“I feel very proud to be at the inaugural event and the way our Australian Team has represented our Association and our Country,” Mr Kirkman said.

“All five Team Australia players were in good form on a challenging course. The competition has been a great success and promoting women in the PGA.

“I was very proud of our team on and off the golf course and the relationships built by all team members and the spirit in which the played was outstanding.”

Team captain Lisa Jean lead from the front hitting the history-making first tee shot on round 1.

The Australian team featured the country’s best vocational female PGA Professionals with captain Lisa and Jade Fisher (both from VIC) playing alongside Gillian Rae (NSW), Bronte Colbert (WA) and Sienna Voglis (VIC).

They competed on the Fazio Foothills Course in a 54-hole, stroke-play event with each team’s lowest three scores counted after each round.

The next PGA Women’s Cup will be played in 2021 and will become a bi-annual event promoting Women in the PGA and women’s golf.
