Andrew Campbell has played a flawless round of golf in the
desert to lead the TX Civil and Logistics WA PGA Championship.
Teeing off in the last group of the morning, Campbell reeled
off seven birdies to fire 7-under the card for a bogey free round.
"I am very happy. I was feeling good early, got a few
birdies and held it together," said Campbell.
"I got a few more coming home in the end, I am just really
happy to shoot a score like that and get off to a good start this week."
While there was no standout moment for Campbell today, he is
happy to see his recent good form translate into a round one lead on the PGA
Tour of Australasia.
"I surprised myself a little I guess. It’s a difficult golf
course and there was a bit of wind out there," added Campbell.
"I was pretty solid all day. I hit a lot of good iron shots
but nothing that really stands out at the moment, just a solid round."
"My form’s been
getting pretty good of late. I played well up in Papua New Guinea and I felt
like it was leading to this point, so I am really happy that I could put it
together in one of the Tour’s events."
Campbell played his first full season on the PGA Tour of
Australasia last year but, as is the way for many rookies, he failed to keep
his card.
"Last year was my first season having status and playing the
Tour. It took some time to get to know it," added Campbell.
"This year I am feeling a lot more comfortable out here and
confident in my game. I know that I can compete with these guys if I play my
game like I did today."
"This is where I want to be playing and I want to try and
get my status back for next year."
If Campbell manages to hold on through the next three rounds
and win the TX Civil and Logistics WA PGA Championship he would become exempt
on Tour until the end of the 2017 season.
However, a number of talented players are hot on his heels.
Recent PGA Trainee Graduate, Deyen Lawson fired 5-under
67 to be two shots off the lead.
Aaron Pike, Jake McLeod, Peter Cooke, Daniel Hoeve and David
Stoltze all finished their first rounds on 3-under the card.
The afternoon field are now on course in
Kalgoorlie.
