Australian Steven Bowditch has claimed his first PGA TOUR win at the Valero Texas Open.

Coming into the final round with scores 69, 67 and 68 Bowditch had a three shot lead and was the only player to have three rounds in the 60’s.

Sunday proved tough going for Bowditch but he maintained his composure to finish with a tournament total of 8-under 280 and claimed the title by a shot from Americans Will MacKenzie and Daniel Summerhays.

Bowditch’s breakthrough victory comes at an important time for the 30-year-old Queenslander who has now earned a start in the Masters.

This will be his first Major since the 2003 Open Championship where he missed the cut and his first chance to play the famed Augusta tournament.

Bowditch becomes the third Australian to win on the PGA TOUR in 2014 after John Senden and Jason Day were also victorious.

Australia remains the only country outside of the US to have a winner on the PGA TOUR this year.
