Boo Weekley has been enjoying all that Fiji has to offer as he
prepares for the 2016 Fiji International.
Weekley was encouraged to attend the Fiji International by
Australian Professional golfer Steven Bowditch who is also playing this week.
Both Weekley and Bowditch took some time away from the course after
some initial practice rounds, to experience a little of the paradise that
make’s Fiji so special.
"We went fishing yesterday at Mantaray Island Resort, it was
gorgeous over there. We went snorkelling and then deep sea fishing," said Weekley.
"The day before we went out on the harbour and pulled up on a reef
and snorkelled…it was fun," he added.
"My caddy, David Robinson, came with me and said it’s one of the most
beautiful places he’s seen in the world, and it is."
Weekley’s experiences during his preparation have also included some
of the cultural aspects of Fijian life.
Invited to participate in the official welcoming Sevu Sevu ceremony Weekley
was moved by the experience.
"It was something special to be invited to; it was overwhelming to
be a part of," said Weekley.
But playing the Fiji International is not only about experiencing
the beauty of Fiji; it’s also about the challenge of the Natadola Bay
Championship Golf Course.
Having played 36 practice holes when he first arrived, Weekley is
also impressed by the golf ahead.
"The golf course is great; you don’t know what to expect when you
come to an island to play golf but this golf course is unreal. It’s going to be
a fun week and I’m excited.
"The golf course is awesome. It’s got so
many elevation changes to the point where you’ve got to be careful. Hitting it
too high up in the air, the wind can blow it off into a hazard.
"It’s a great layout; I thought they did a
good job and the greens are perfect for the size of the golf course."
It was announced this week that during the
fourth round, players would also be vying for an incredible hole-in-one prize
on the 13th hole which could see them become proud owners of a 1619
square metre block of land at Natadola Bay Land Estates.
After his incredible experiences of the
Fijian way of life, the chance to win his own piece of paradise valued at
AU$480,000 was exciting news to Weekley.
"That would be cool, I could get used to
living here! That’s perfect! That’s happy
golfing."
Weekley was adamant that he was going to
take his best shot at securing a piece of island life. "I’ll be focussing on
the hole-in-one; I’ll be going for a hole-in-one."
After an incredible start to his week, it
looks like Weekley has a lot to thank his long time friend for.
"Steven Bowditch, my mate, he’s the one who
told me to come over and try this. I’m
enjoying it and I’m probably going to come back again if I get the chance."
