Four Australians will be in the field for
the year’s second senior major which tees off this week in Michigan.
European Senior Tour regulars Peter Fowler
and Peter O’Malley will join US counterparts Craig Parry and Peter Senior for
the Senior PGA Championship which begins in Michigan Thursday.
The tournament is the second of five majors
on the over-50’s circuit, the first played last week at the Regions Tradition
in Alabama.
Senior and Parry both teed up last week
though a disappointing final round for Senior saw him drop out of the top-20
while Parry stumbled in the third round and finished mid-field.
However, all four Australians will be
motivated this week with the Senior PGA more recognised globally as one of the
game’s biggest events.
O’Malley and Parry both make their first appearance
at the Senior PGA this week having only joined the senior ranks in the past 12
months but Fowler and Senior have both played the tournament six times.
Senior, a regular fixture on the Champions
Tour since 2010, has the better record of the pair with top-five finishes in
both 2011 and 2012 and six made cuts from six attempts.
For Fowler the assignment is more difficult
as he plays little golf in the US and faces the strongest fields of the year
when he does make the journey.
The late start to the European Senior Tour
schedule also means there has been no tournament golf played in 2016 so those
who make the trip from Europe are at a disadvantage.
For both Parry and O’Malley the week is an
unknown quantity and while O’Malley tees up for the first time this year Parry
is due to put together four good rounds.
In his rookie year on the over-50’s, Parry
has produced plenty of good golf most weeks but hasn’t yet been able to string
together multiple good scores.
An opening 68 last week suggests his form
is close and this could be the week ‘Popeye’ contends for his first senior
major.
