The Royal Queensland Cup boasts an 87 year history, with the past three years incorporated into Royal Queensland Golf Club’s Ladbrokes PGA Legends Tour Pro-Am.
Unfortunately the dual Royal Queensland Cup champion from the past two years was unable to compete this year, opening the door for 42 Legend Professionals competing to add their name to the club’s history.
Following a 3-under par 69, including birdies at his final three holes, Richard Backwell has claimed his first Royal Queensland Cup.
Backwell finished two shots clear of Martin Peterson and Stephen Woodhead who claimed the Gold Coast Senior Open late last year.
“I managed to get off to a good start to be three under at the turn, though with three bogies in the middle of my round I knew I needed to finish strong if I was in with a chance,” said Backwell
“Thankfully I was able to hang on following that stretch with a couple of good par saves, and there is no doubt that making birdies on my final three holes really set up the win today.
“I feel privileged to have won here today and add my name to 93 years of history.”
The Ladbrokes PGA Legends Tour will remain in Brisbane over the next two weeks, with the next Pro-Am on the schedule to be played at the Brisbane Golf Club on Monday.
