Backwell back to flushing drivers in Maroochy River win

Richard Backwell has won the Maroochy River Legends Pro-Am by one stroke over Grant Williams at Maroochy River Golf Club.

Originally set to be played in December 2020 the PGA Legends Tour event was rescheduled to February 2021 where Tour newcomer Williams set the pace in the morning field with four birdies and a lone bogey for a round of 3-under 69.

Backwell, however, proved too good in the afternoon group with a round of 4-under 68 courtesy of an impressive seven birdies and three bogeys. Backwell’s ability to tame the immaculate yet quick Maroochy River greens made all the difference for the Queensland local.

“This is a surprise as I now have a full time ‘real’ job and have not played a lot of golf in recent months,” said Backwell.

“I have a property management business and whilst all these other Professionals are flushing drivers I am flushing toilets,” Backwell joked.

“I was really looking forward to playing here in December however after seeing the condition of the course today I am glad it was played today. It was immaculate.”

Williams was thrilled to play the way he did in his first event as a PGA of Australia Member.

“After working as a PGA of Great Britain Member in the Netherlands for the last 20 years I cannot tell you how much I enjoyed today,” said Williams.

“The show that the Maroochy River team put on today was outstanding.”

PGA Legends Tour regular Terry Price finished in outright third place with a score of 2-under, ahead of John Wright, Allan Cooper, Tod Power, Stephen Woodhead and Christopher McCourt in a tie for fourth place at 1-under the card.

The 59-Professional field congratulated and thanked the Maroochy River team and General Manager Charlie McGill in particular for their hard work in running a fantastic event and their support of the PGA Legends Tour.

The PGA Legends Tour now moves to Victoria for a swing of events throughout March.
