With the PGA TOUR having a rare week off
caused by devastating floods in West Virginia the secondary Web.com Tour will
be the main focus of US golf fans this week with eight Australians showing off
their wares at the Lecom Health Challenge in New York.
Just eight full field events remain before
the Web.com Tour Finals Series begins and several of the Australian regulars
are in desperate need of good results if they are a chance to graduate to the
PGA TOUR in 2017.
Brett Drewitt is the only Australian inside
the top-50 on the money list (currently 35th) while Steve Allan (80) and Bryden Macpherson
(95) are the only others inside the top-100.
The top-25 at year’s end are automatically
exempt to the PGA TOUR next year while the top-75 will be eligible for the
Finals Series to determine the remaining 25 cards.
Joining Drewitt, Allan and Macpherson this
week are fellow Web.com regulars Peter Lonard, Mathew Goggin and Oliver Goss
while Rhein Gibson and Cameron Percy will also tee up.
Both Gibson and Percy posted their best
finishes of the season at last week’s Barracuda Championship on the PGA TOUR
and will bring some confidence to this week’s tournament but so, too, will the
veteran Peter Lonard.
The 49-year-old has been struggling all
season but at his most recent event, the Air Capital Classic two weeks ago,
found something in his game when he opened with a 66 and closed with his best
round of the year, a 7-under 63.
Lonard is playing the 2016 Web.com season
as preparation for joining the Champions Tour next year and a strong finish to
the year would be a big boost to his confidence.
Scott Gardiner is listed as an alternate
for this week’s field.
