12 Aussies set for Memorial

There are Australian storylines aplenty at this week’s Memorial Tournament as an eclectic mix of 12 Down Under contenders tee up at Jack Nicklaus’ prestigious event in Ohio.

There are Australian storylines aplenty at this week’s Memorial Tournament as an eclectic mix of 12 Down Under contenders tee up at Jack Nicklaus’ prestigious event in Ohio.

""From World Top-10 players and perennial contenders Jason Day and Adam Scott to the youth brigade of Ryan Ruffels, Curtis Luck and Brett Coletta, Australian fans have plenty to cheer for at Muirfield Village.

Those five are joined by Tour regulars Aaron Baddeley, Greg Chalmers, Steven Bowditch, Marc Leishman, Rod Pampling and Cameron Smith with Japan Tour player Matt Griffin also in the field courtesy of his excellent play on last year’s ISPS HANDA PGA Tour of Australasia.

Adam Scott and Jason Day will lead the Australian charge, Scott teeing up in Ohio for the first time since a T4 finish in 2014.

That result was his third top five in nine starts here and after a top 10 result in his last outing at The PLAYERS he comes to Ohio with plenty of confidence.

Day, too, brings excellent form to the tournament after a close call a fortnight ago at the Byron Nelson.

It was Day’s first time in genuine contention in 2017 and an uncharacteristic miss from short range at the first play-off hole will provide plenty of motivation this week.

Yet to finish higher than T27 at this tournament, look for the World Number 3 to improve on that record as preparations begin in earnest for the upcoming US Open and Open Championships.

While Day and Scott will dominate the media attention four other Australians have particularly intriguing weeks ahead.

Curtis Luck, Ryan Ruffels and Brett Coletta are at the forefront of Australia’s next generation of potentially great players and entry to an event of this stature is an important step on the journey.

Luck, Ruffels and Coletta have been extended invites while Matt Griffin, earns his place in the field through the ISPS HANDA PGA Tour of Australasia Order of Merit.

While yet to qualify for playing privileges on either the Web.com or PGA TOUR, Ruffels has produced some good play on the secondary PGA TOUR LatinoAmerica and tees up in the Memorial for the second time.

He impressed on debut in 2016 with an opening round 67 to be inside the top-10 and went on to finish T38 but will be looking to improve on that this week.

A second place finish earlier this month on the Latin America circuit came courtesy of a final round 63 and Ruffels also shared the first round lead with partner Kyle Stanley at the Zurich Classic teams event in April.

That suggests the talented teen’s game is in good shape and a high finish this week is not beyond him.

Luck, too, comes to Ohio with some confidence after posting his best result on the PGA TOUR last week.

The West Australian has wasted little time finding his feet in the Professional ranks and will be looking to build on his good play at the Dean and DeLuca Invitational as US Open qualifying awaits Monday after the Memorial finishes.

For Griffin the opportunity to tee up on the PGA TOUR is a significant one and represents a big reward for his good play back home.

A regular on the Japan Tour, Griffin finished top of the 2016 Order of Merit in Australia and this week’s start, alongside teeing up at the WGC Mexico Championship in February, are among the spoils of victory.

Of the remaining Australians Marc Leishman continues to quietly go about his business in 2017 and brings good memories of this tournament into the week.

He was T11 in 2016 and T5 the year prior and will no doubt be eyeing similar results this week.
