The inaugural Australian Master of the Amateurs PGA Challenge Shield has been won by Team AMOTA with a convincing of 33 to 19 score line.

The Challenge Shield, a new and exciting initiative sees 54 of the world’s highest ranked amateur golfer take on 54 of Victoria’s Club, Teaching and Tour professionals on the famous Royal Melbourne West Course.

Captained by up and coming US star Jordan Niebrugge, Team AMOTA led 17 to 10 after the morning field, only to extend that margin to win by a total of 14 points.

Australian golf legend and Team PGA Captain Peter Senior has vowed to return next year and win back the title.

Royal Melbourne bared its teeth with firm, fast greens accompanied by 50kph winds making scoring extremely difficult.  "These are the hardest conditions I have even played in here at Royal", Peter Senior said after his round.

In the Individual Am-Pro section, Web.com player and Victorian professional Ashley Hall claimed the title with an exceptional round of one under-par 71, one shot clear of Anthony Brown.

In one of the highlights of the day Royal Melbourne resident Professional Bruce Green finished in a tie for third place after carding a one over 73, Green was joined by David McKenzie, Chris Gaunt and Mark Allen.

In another win for the amateurs West Australian Daniel Hoeve and Victorian Todd Sinnott each recorded the round of the day with a two under-par 70.

Amateur players from Australia, USA, UK, New Zealand, China, Japan, Chinese-Taipei, Mexico and Fiji will be back at Royal Melbourne Tuesday for the first round of the 2014 Australian Master of the Amateurs Championship.

It is the highest ranked amateur golf championship in Australia. First played in 1997, eight Green Jacket champions have gone on to have successful professional careers.

The next four days provides a great opportunity to follow these rising stars around the Royal Melbourne fairways … and entry is free.
