Percy looking to exorcise demons

Having gradated to the PGA TOUR for the third time Cameron Percy will have lots of good memories – and one bad one – to draw on as he tees up in the season’s second event in Las vegas this week.

It was in 2010 the Victorian became the answer to a golf
trivia question when American Jonathan Byrd beat he and Martin Laird in a
sudden death playoff for the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open by making a
hole in one at the fourth extra hole.

A third round 62 that year catapulted Percy into contention
and it will likely be that, rather than the historic finish, he will be drawing
on this week.

Coming off a good year on the secondary Web.com Tour where
he won late in the season Percy feels he is in good position to have his best
year in three tries on the PGA TOUR in 2014/15.

The 40-year-old leads a seven strong Australian contingent
this week in Las Vegas which includes 2003 winner Stuart Appleby, last week’s
standout performers Steven Bowditch and Robert Allenby as well as John Senden,
Aaron Baddeley and Jarrod Lyle.

All but Senden teed up at the Fry’s.com Open last week with
varying results, Bowditch’s runner-up finish the highlight with Robert
Allenby’s top 10 also encouraging.

Lyle was also impressive having Monday qualified for the
event and his first tournament back after a two year battle with cancer saw him
finish T31.

He is playing on a sponsor’s invite this week, the first of
many he will need if he is to take advantage of the 19 starts he is entitled to
as he tries to regain the card he held in 2012.

Appleby’s final round 77 in California will have left a bad
taste in his mouth but having won at this course previously he will take plenty
of positives to the first tee Thursday.

Baddeley plays this week’s event for the first time in four
years having finished T8 at his last appearance in 2010.

He got off to a good start last week though struggled to
sustain the momentum over the final rounds and will be looking for more
consistency this week.
