Opportunity continues to knock for Cameron Smith after his good play at last week’s CIMB Classic in Malaysia earned him a second PGA TOUR start this week at the Sanderson Farms Championship.
Coming off six consecutive to- 10’s on the Asian Tour Smith continues to impress in his second year as a Professional and joined an elite club with his T5 finish last week.
The 21-year-old became the first player since Chris Wood at the 2008 British Open to finish in the top-10 in his debut PGA TOUR event. Anthony Kim and Andres Romero are the only other two to achieve that feat since 2000.
Smith won’t be thinking about that as he tees up this week in Missouri, though, with the chance to earn a two year PGA TOUR exemption should he win, or further starts with another high finish, no doubt upper most in his mind.
While he is yet to win as a Professional his form in Asia, coupled with last week’s result in a considerably stronger field, is proof of his talent and with confidence on his side Smith must be considered at least an outside chance this week.
With the WGC event being played in China this week the Sanderson Farms also presents an opportunity for a couple of other non-exempt Australians in Greg Chalmers and Rod Pampling.
Both will tee up in Missouri having failed to earn full playing rights for the 2014/15 season and like Smith both will be looking for good performances to create further opportunities.
Chalmers was in the field last week in Malaysia but a poor first round proved costly despite some better play over the final three rounds.
A mid field finish was the end result but the left-hander has been on the circuit long enough to know it can all turn around in a single week and he will have victory as his goal.
Two time TOUR winner Rod Pampling is also a veteran of Tour life and will tee up for the first time since the Web.com Finals in September.
The Queenslander split his time between the secondary and main Tours last year and will no doubt be keen to again take advantage of any tournament invites that come his way this season.
Both Chalmers and Pampling have played this event several times before but with a new sponsor and at a new venue this year past results offer little insight into their chances.
Cameron Percy rounds out the Australians in this week’s field after a week off last week.
Having earned full playing privileges for the third time since 2010 the Victorian has wasted no time getting into the swing in 2014/15 playing three of the first four events of the season.
While he is yet to miss a cut he will be looking to improve on a best finish of T26 at the season opener and move up from his 83rd placing in the FedEx Cup standings.
