Stormy weather greets day one

The Australian PGA Championship, which started this morning at RACV Royal Pines Resort is off to a stormy start as the afternoon field has been called off course in a weather delay.

The Australian PGA Championship, which started this morning at RACV Royal Pines Resort is off to a stormy start as the afternoon field has been called off course in a weather delay.

""While rain was yet to hit the course, the threatening storm coming out of the south west was enough to force a suspension due to lightning.

"We were hoping it would slip down to the south but unfortunately we’re going to get the tail of it. There was lightning out there, so we had no choice but to pull the pin." said Andrew Langford-Jones, PGA Tour of Australasia Tournament Director.

"The good news is even if there was no more play today, what we would do is send them out early in the morning, 5.30am maybe, the boys that have to finish, would finish and then just roll back out for the normal tee times, slightly delayed but the normal second round tee times." added Langford-Jones.

In what has been a rainy week of golf, with played called off during both days of practice on Monday and Tuesday, the PGA of Australia are still confident that there will be a result for the Championship within normal tournament days.

When asked whether the organisers were at all anxious about the days ahead, Langford-Jones showed conviction in his response.

"No, we’re very confident.  We’ve had much worse than this, for those that are into your history."

He was also extremely complementary of the course and how it was holding up.

"The course has handled the rain beautifully.  We can’t believe how good the course is, especially the front nine.  The new front nine has been sensational.  The bunkers have needed no draining all week." said Langford-Jones.

Play is currently set to resume at 4.30pm local time with players currently warming up on the range.
