Dave Merriman has taken out the season ending Legends Tour Championships at Byron Bay with a final round one-under-par 71.

"DavidStarting Sunday’s final round two shots behind overnight leader Mike Harwood, Merriman held strong on the front nine while Harwood started his day with a devastating opening nine of five-over-par 41 which included a bogey-double bogey-bogey start to fall back to the chasing pack including the third member of the final group, Glenn Joyner who managed to stay in touch with Merriman.

Joyner and Merriman were tied for the lead with nine to play and before long, Merriman had opened up a three-shot lead after consecutive birdies on 13,14 and 15.

Todd Power stormed home to finish in equal second with Joyner at even par (216) following a final round two-under-par 70.

The low round of the day went to crowd favourite Terry Price who posted a closing three-under-par 69 to finish in 11th place.

"I really made some great putts on the back nine and steadied the ship after a nervous front nine" said Merriman who has now won six E-Z-GO Legends Tour events in 2014.

"The course is good enough to host an Australian Open on and it was just  a great test of golf all week" added Merriman.

Taking out the E-Z-GO Legends Tour Order of Merit was Tim Elliot who finished in equal fourth with Mike Harwood for the event.

Merriman finished with a bang, winning the final two events of the season and clear in second place behind Elliot in the season long standings.

The Byron Bay Golf Club has hosted the illustrious event in the past eight years and has established itself as one of the premiere events on the Legends Tour.

Club Captain Peter Sinclair was among many to praise Superintendent Shaun Cross for preparing a sensational golf course, a feat which reflects his recent accolades including 2013 Queensland Superintendent of the year.

The Tour championships caps off a very eventful year on the E-Z-GO Legends Tour which encompasses events all over Australia and New Zealand and offers in excess of $1 million dollars in prize money for professional golfers over the age of 50.

The Legends players will enjoy several weeks rest before resuming in Sydney in mid January for the 2015 season.
