Scott Hend was a model of consistency in his first appearance as a full European Tour member at the Abu Dhabi HSBC tournament last week.
The 42-year-old, who earned membership to the Tour with awin at the Asian Tour co-sanctioned Hong Kong Open last October, fired roundsof 70-70-70-69 to finish T31, a shot behind leading Australian Richard Green.
Hend, one of the most travelled Professionals in the game, made 18 birdies for the week but mixed in nine dropped shots to finish 9-under-par,10 shots behind surprise winner Gary Stal.
Green got off to a hot start in the desert with back to backrounds of 4-under 68 but while solid over the weekend dropped off the pace witha pair of 71’s.
The left hander says he played some of the best golf of hislife in 2014 and has picked up where he left off in 2015 after putting in somegood performances over the Australian summer.
Marcus Fraser was the third Australian to make the cut andwill also be pleased with his form after missing much of last season recoveringfrom wrist surgery.
Fraser finished on the same score as Hend though was lessconsistent with two rounds of even par sandwiched by 68-67 on Friday andSaturday.
Abu Dhabi featured the strongest field Fraser has competedagainst since returning late last year and while he has had higher finishes inthe interim will take plenty of confidence from his first performance of 2015.
Of the five Australians who teed up in Abu Dhabi BrettRumford and Wade Ormsby both missed the cut with over par performances in thefirst two rounds.
Rumford had one of his worst seasons in the last decade in2014 and while he won’t be happy with his play in Abu Dhabi it is a venue hehas always struggled at.
This was his fourth consecutive missed cut here and with abest finish of T20 in eight attempts he likely didn’t have high expectationsfor the week.
