After ripping up the Kapalua course with a record equalling 62 the week before Jason Day looked to be riding a wave of hot form when he opened with a 5-under 65 at the Sony Open on Thursday.
But the Queenslander couldn’t maintain the momentum and despite being in a share of 6th after 18 holes faded over the final three rounds to eventually finish T17.
Day played good golf for the week but in a low scoring tournament featuring a leader board where 11 players finished within two shots of second place his final three rounds of 69-68-68 were only good enough for a top 20 result.
Day shared top Australian honours with Stuart Appleby whose 7-under-par weekend saw him move several places up the leaderboard and post his best result for the 2014/15 season.
Nine Australians teed up at this week’s Sony Open, the first full field event of 2015, with five surviving all four rounds and producing some highlights along the way.
After a lacklustre opening round of even par Victoria’s Marc Leishman lit up the course on day two with an 8-under-par 62.
The joy was short lived, however, as he failed to break 70 in either weekend round and eventually finished 7-under-par for the four rounds and T37.
Steven Bowditch also posted his best round on Friday with a 6-under 64 which guaranteed he was around for the weekend but, like Leishman, couldn’t reproduce those numbers and also finished 7-under for the week.
Matt Jones was the last Australian to make the cut but will be disappointed with his weekend play after making a good start to the tournament.
At 5-under through two rounds he was playing well without being in contention but his game deserted him on Saturday and Sunday as he shot 72-75 to finish last in the field.
John Senden fell victim to the third round cut while Cameron Percy, Robert Allenby and Geoff Ogilvy were all over par after two rounds and well outside the cut line of 2-under.
