After the disappointment of last week’s finish at Pebble Beach Matt Jones will be seeking revenge of sorts at this week’s Northern Trust Open at the famed Riviera course in California.
The 34-year-old’s final round 73 last week was a blip in an otherwise strong performance and he will be keen to put it behind him when the gun goes off Thursday.
While past performance doesn’t suggest it will be easy (he has played the tournament only twice finishing T59 and T70) Jones is a more mature and confident golfer after his maiden win last year and those results may not be much of a guide.
Jones hasn’t missed a cut since the 2015 segment of the wrap around season began with 11 of 20 rounds under 70.
His results have been marred by one poor round per week, a similar pattern to the early part of last year in the months leading up to his win in Texas.
While Jones will be looking for redemption two former winners, Robert Allenby and Aaron Baddeley, will be trying to draw on good memories.
Riviera was the site of Allenby’s most dramatic win in 2001 when, during a six man play-off in driving rain, he drilled an amazing 3-wood second shot to six feet and made the putt for victory.
The shot is sure to be replayed during this week’s coverage and given his off course issues this year that will only be a positive for the Victorian.
The win aside, Riviera has tended to bring out the best in Allenby’s game with a further three top-10’s in his 16 starts, the most recent a T4 in 2011.
That was the year Aaron Baddeley took the title by two shots from Vijay Singh, the last of his three PGA TOUR wins to date.
Like Allenby, Baddeley has had a happy relationship with Riviera missing the cut only once in 12 attempts though he has posted more mid-field finishes than top-10’s.
A missed cut two weeks ago at Torrey Pines was Baddeley’s first in the seven events he’s played since the season started last year though with a best finish of T17 at Phoenix it’s been a solid though not spectacular performance.
A total of eight Australians will tee up this week at one of the TOUR’s oldest and most prestigious tournaments though for most Riviera has not been a fruitful tournament.
Stuart Appleby has just two top-10’s to go with four missed cuts in 15 attempts while Steven Bowditch has missed the cut twice and withdrawn once in three visits.
Surprisingly, course architecture afficianado Geoff Ogilvy also has a poor record at one of the more respected layouts on Tour with six missed cuts and no top-10’s in 11 trips to the tournament.
Marc Leishman and John Senden are the final two Australians in the field, neither having posted a top-10 in a combined 15 attempts.
