Jason Norris came agonisingly close to a maiden OneAsia victory at the prestigious Caltex Maekyung Open at the weekend but stumbled in difficult final round conditions to finish in a share of second.
On a day when only two players broke 70 and
10 shot 80 or worse the 42-year-old made two double bogeys on the back nine of
the treacherous Namseoul Golf Club to shoot 77 and finish two shots behind
eventual winner Kyongjun Moon.
Norris had a two shot lead entering the
final round and birdied the first hole but dropped three shots before the turn
and couldn’t get anything going on the back nine.
Level with Moon with seven holes to play
Norris made a double bogey at the par-5 14th to give up the lead and
although he hit back with a birdie at the 16th made another double
at the 17th to seal his fate.
Norris, a three time winner on the PGA Tour
of Australasia, was in good form all week taking a share of the lead through 36
holes and holding it until late in the final round.
"It is
disappointing," Norris told the One Asia website after Sunday’s final round.
"I had a great
chance but there is such a fine line. It has been a great week though."
Also finishing T2 were fellow PGA Tour of
Australasia members Ryan Fox and Gareth Paddison with Steven Jeffress also in
the top-10 at T8.
Nathan Holman, who struggled in the third
round with a 77, was one of only 14 players to shoot under par Sunday to finish
in a share of 13th, the only other Australian inside the top-20.
