In June last year Marc Leishman began a hot streak which included top-five finishes at both The Open and WGC Bridgestone and a career best finish at The Memorial this week might feel like déjà vu for the Victorian.
Rounds of 69-67-71-69 saw Leishman finish
T5 at Muirfield Village, easily eclipsing a previous best of T37, and could
well spark another hot run of form.
Having ensured his place in the US Open
last week the 31-year-old is now in excellent shape to launch an assault on the
final three majors of the year, a fitting position after the disappointment of
missing the Masters because of the ill health of his wife, Audrey.
Leishman finished just three shots out of a
play-off for one of the most prestigious titles on Tour and will take plenty of
confidence into the northern summer with the statistics suggesting all parts of
his game are in good shape.
He was above average for the week in all
categories at The Memorial but particularly pleasing was his 1.384 figure in
the Strokes Gained Putting category.
Leishman lamented earlier in the year he
felt good about all aspects of his game except his work on the greens but if he
continues to putt as well as he did this week he’s likely to be a factor in
some big events in the coming weeks.
While Leishman leaves Ohio with nothing but
positive feelings Jason Day must be experiencing the opposite after missing the
cut at his home club.
While he has never fared particularly well
at The Memorial, the bigger concern is about his health with mysterious bouts
of dizziness and lethargy still bothering the 27-year-old.
Having withdrawn from the Byron Nelson
event in Texas last week a pair of even par 72’s was a lackluster performance
for Day and with the US Open just two weeks away hardly an ideal preparation.
Day and Cameron Smith were the only two of
the seven Australians in the field to miss the cut, Greg Chalmers (T31), Matt
Jones (T40), Steven Bowditch (T52) and John Senden (T57) all around for the
weekend.
Chalmers was consistent over the four days and
while still outside the top-125 needed to get his full card back for next year,
he did move up 10 places to 154th in the FedEx Cup standings.
Fatigue finally caught up with Steven
Bowditch after last week’s win and after opening with three good rounds of
69-71-68 he ballooned to a final round 80 and dropped 38 places on the leader
board.
