The sand scrape greens of Port Hedland Golf Club have proven to the fields liking at the BHP Billiton Classic with almost every player under par after two rounds.
Queenslander Brett Rankin leads the way on an impressive
17-under the card at the 36 hole mark.
Heading into the final round Rankin holds a slim lead from
South Australian Max McCardle and West Australian Tristan McCallum who are both
just one shot back on 16-under the card.
Rankin knows he will be the man to catch tomorrow and
needs to play flawless golf if he is to take home the title.
"This is my first time in WA and my first time on sand
greens, I can’t complain, I’m loving the target golf," said Rankin.
"From what I can tell, there won’t be any room to make
mistakes tomorrow because anybody within three or four shots could
realistically win,"
"One thing is for sure this week, just like last year, it’s
going to take a really low number for the three rounds to win this thing,"
Rankin added.
Not to be outdone West Australian Simon Houston (WA)
posted the tournament’s second 10-under 62 which catapulted him up the
leaderboard. He is now just three shots off the lead.
Houston won this event in 2013 and knows just how low you
have to go to get it done in Port Hedland.
"If I can have back-to-back 62’s that might just put some
heat on the leaders, I’ll be doing my best to see if I can get back into it and
contend tomorrow."
The action is set to continue Sunday at Port Hedland Golf
Club from 8:30am
