Royal Queensland Golf Club has become the newest stop on the E-Z-GO PGA Legends Tour.
Professionals were delighted
to grace the fairways of the prestigious golf club based in Brisbane for the inaugural
Royal Queensland Legends Pro-Am.
For many in the field, it
was their first time competing on the layout since its has under gone redevelopment,
players the ilk of Rodger Davis, Mike Harwood, Tim Elliot and David Merriman
all gave it their tick of approval.
However it was Merriman who
emerged victorious, with a winning score of 5-under 67, he inscribed his name
on the Royal Queensland Cup.
Merriman, who also won the
2014 Queensland Senior PGA Championship, fought hard for his win.
Starting with back-to-back
bogeys, Merriman got back to square on his next hole by holing a bunker shot
for eagle.
Another eagle on the par 4
16th and birdie on 17th gave a great deal of confidence
to Merriman.
"Starting the way I did, I
was questioning my chances of scoring well today" said Merriman.
"I think luck was on my side
and was able to get myself into the right positions to score well. To be the
first winner of this event is very pleasing."
Following closely behind was
2014 Order of Merit winner Tim Elliot who recently returned from England after
the British Senior Open. Elliot was the only other player under par for the day
with a score of 2-under 70.
Players will now have the weekend to prepare for the next
event at Brisbane Golf Club on Monday.
