He has dreamed of it since he was a 13 year old child and
today its official, Jason Day is the World Number 1.
Speaking yesterday following his win at the BMW
Championship, the title which saw him earn enough Official World Golf Ranking
points to take the top spot, Day says this was always his biggest goal.
"I just always had a
vision of me standing on top of the earth when I was a kid and knowing that
right now there’s no one on this planet that’s better than me, that’s pretty
cool," said Day.
"That out of all the golfers in
the world playing right now, that I’m the best. It’s such a good feeling.
That’s kind of what I was thinking about when I was a little kid."
"It feels surreal right now. I still feel like I
did yesterday or the day before that. I’m still a regular guy that is really
good at hitting a golf ball."
It’s been a long journey for
Day who alongside his coach, caddy, best friend and mentor, PGA Professional
Col Swatton, came up with a plan to see his dream become reality.
"It’s been a goal of
ours personally, myself and Colin. We had a plan. We said we were trying to get
to Number 1 in the world at 22."
"We had an actual plan, okay,
this is what you’re going to do, this is what you need to practice, this is how
everything needs to happen, and at 22 you’re going to be Number 1."
"I’m five years late, six years
late. But I mean, it’s better late than never," added Day who says he
owes his success to Swatton.
"I have him to thank a lot of
this to. I mean, he’s been an amazing supporter ever since I met him, ever
since we had that first fight, and coming back to apologize to him, the amount
of work that he puts in every single day."
"To take a 12-year-old kid from
nothing and turn him into the best golfer in the world is a pretty nice
achievement."
Day’s pursuit of World Number 1
has long been known by the golfing public, his self-belief evident since he
made headlines as an 18-year-old for wanting to take over Tiger Wood’s strangle
hold on the top spot.
"It’s good to sit in this chair
right now, knowing that what I said back when I was 18 years old, it’s taken
some time, but nine years later, 10 years later, it’s worked out. Now I’m
sitting on top of the world right now," added Day, who has wise words for the
next crop of aspiring World Number 1 players.
"It’s okay to dream big. It’s
okay to say what you want to do. And for people that don’t respect that, then
you really don’t need to give them the time, because who am I or who are they
to tell you that you shouldn’t be able to do something."
"To sit up here today, Number 1
in the world, looking back when I was an 18 year old kid, very full of
confidence, there’s not much I would say."
"Everyone has dreams; as long
as you stick to them and work hard, you can accomplish anything."
Now that his lifelong goal has
been accomplished, Day is looking to the future and the career slam is his next
pursuit.
"Those are the goals that I’ve
always wanted, and I’ve ticked them off now," added Day.
"I’d love to win all the Majors;
get the career Grand Slam would be fantastic."
"I’m just here for this one
purpose, and that’s to try and get better each and every day and try and win as
much as I can, while I can."
"It’s not going to last
forever, so I may as well do it quickly."
