The 2016 E-Z-GO PGA Legends Tour teed off this week with over $120,000 worth of prize money up for grabs across four first class Sydney venues.

Peter Fowler started the year in much the same as he finished 2015 taking a commanding five stroke victory over Queenslander, Richard Backwell at the FUSO Trucks and Buses Cromer Legends Pro-Am.

In a seven birdie round, Fowler’s only blemish came on the par-five 3rd where he made bogey.

As member of the European Senior Tour again this year, Fowler will be looking to go one better on the E-Z-GO PGA Legends Tour Order of Merit in 2016 after finishing runner up to good friend Michael Harwood who dominated the 2015 with 15 wins for the season.

The inaugural Pymble Legends Pro-Am followed on Wednesday with one of the greats of Australian golf, Peter O’Malley, claiming his maiden victory on the E-Z-GO PGA Legends Tour.

The 50-year-old fired a 4-under 68 which was enough to hold off Fowler and fellow New South Welshman, David Hando, who shared second place with rounds of 3-under 69.

O’Malley was a popular winner on Wednesday. The Pymble golf club member who was invited him to join the club’s junior program back in the 70s and where the youngster began his journey towards Professional golf.

"I have very fond memories of Pymble, it’s a great feeling. To come back and be able to win my first Legends Tour event here is amazing," said O’Malley who will be the favorite going into the prestigious Dave Mercer Senior Classic at Killara on Thursday.

A fresh face on the E-Z-GO PGA Legends Tour, the 50-year-old will join Fowler and Harwood throughout the year on the European Senior Tour.

The $60,000 tournament will showcase some of the greats of Australian golf, including Mercer himself who will celebrate his 85th birthday in April.

Opening week of the E-Z-GO PGA Legends Tour wraps up on Friday at the Penrith Golf Club Legends Pro-Am and with temperatures set to reach close to 40 degrees in Western Sydney it will test all players on course.

"We have a great buzz around the club at the moment and we are all excited to host the Legends Tour. Fingers crossed Mother Nature is on our side," said Brendon Kopp General Manager at Penrith Golf Club.
