Encouraging signs for Scott at Wells Fargo

Adam Scott and John Senden shared top Australian honours at the Wells Fargo tournament, both playing well to finish under par and inside the top-20 at one of the toughest tournaments of the year.

Scott will be particularly pleased with his play after a month long break following the US Masters, the World Number 7 shaking off some early rust to shoot under par in two of the four rounds.

An opening 73, caused in large by a double bogey at the short par-4 14th, wasn’t the start Scott was looking for but he fought bravely the rest of the week to finish under par.

Interestingly, he made another double at the same hole in the final round and sandwiched two birdies in between to be plus two on a sub 330 metre hole for the week.

The Quail Hollow course is one of the most difficult the players face all year and given his opening round struggles, Scott did well to be one of only 27 players to finish in red figures for the week.

Senden, too, will be pleased with his week’s work heading to this week’s PLAYERS’ championship as he continues a return to form from an indifferent start to the year.

The 45-year-old has been at less than his best much of this season with six missed cuts in 15 starts and only one top-10, at the Honda Classic in February.

However, the 15-year TOUR veteran has showed signs of life in recent weeks with four cuts made in his last five starts and improvements in all facets of his game.

After a good finish last week in New Orleans, Senden has played his way back into the top-125 on the FedEx Cup standings and while not yet assured of keeping his card for 2017 looks on track to do so.

Scott and Senden were among eight Australians to tee up in Charlotte but were the only two to survive the 36 hole cut.

Stuart Appleby and Steven Bowditch both missed by a single shot after disappointing finishes to their second rounds.

Appleby made a double bogey seven at the par-5 15th to finish with a 74, while Bowditch took six up the par-4 18th to also miss by the narrowest of margins.

Rookie Cameron Smith was also the victim of a double bogey at the par-5 15th in round two on his way to missing the cut by two while Matt Jones, Geoff Ogilvy and Robert Allenby all struggled to miss by three or more.
