Victoria’s Kristopher Mueck has played his way into next week’s European Tour event in Mauritius thanks to a brilliant performance at the Trophee Hassan II tournament in Morocco.
The 26-year-old Victorian earned a sponsor’s invite in Morocco and made the most of it with rounds of 72-70-73-72.
His even par final round in difficult conditions proved crucial for the week, the score moving him up five places on the leaderboard and into an exemption for Mauritius.
Mueck, who had previously only played co-sanctioned European events in Australia at the ISPS Handa Perth International and Australian PGA Championship, now has a chance to earn limited status if he can produce another good finish this week.
His form in recent weeks has been good with top-10 finishes in two of his last three starts, a T3 at the Coca-Cola Queensland PGA Championship in March which was highlighted by an opening round 63.
He backed that up with a T9 at the South Pacific Export PNG Open two weeks ago and was T19 at the Nexus Risk TSA Group WA Open last week.
One of only nine players to finish in red figures for the week at the difficult Royal Golf Dar Es Salam course, Mueck was also the leading Australian for the week as he passed Jason Scrivener on the leader board in the final round.
It was a disappointing result for Scrivener who shared the 18-hole lead and was in a share of second at the halfway point but faded at the weekend.
His Saturday round of 75 was particularly costly as he slipped four shots behind the leader on a golf course where making up shots proved difficult all week.
Despite shooting 2-over 74 on Sunday it was far from a poor round as only two players broke 70 on the day and only five were under par for the final 18.
Scrivener’s eventual T10 finish was his second best result of the season after his outright third at the Perth International and he has moved to 67th on the Race to Dubai standings.
Long hitting Todd Sinnott was next best of the Australians. As one of only 10 players to shoot par or better in the final round, Sinnott’s even par 72 moved him 23 places up the leaderboard to T34.
It was a difficult week for the remainder of the Australians, NSW Open champion Ben Eccles finishing 9-over and T55, one ahead of Dimi Papadatos who was T59.
New Zealand’s Ryan Fox battled all week to be 11-over and T63, Terry Pilkadaris also at that mark after a final round 79.
Ryan Lynch, Nick Cullen, Daniel Gaunt and Richard Green all missed the weekend’s action.
