Peter Fowler
has rallied to finish inside the top-10 at the Senior Open Championship at
Carnoustie after a disappointing Saturday cost him a chance at victory.
The five time
winner on the European Senior Tour was just one shot out of the lead through 36
holes but couldn’t get going Saturday and signed for a 75 which left him too
much to do on Sunday.
Fowler wasn’t
the only one to find the going tough on day three with just four sub 70 scores
posted at the iconic Scottish layout but he hit back on the final day with a
1-under 71 to climb back inside the top-10.
One of five
Australians to qualify for the tournament, only Fowler and Mike Harwood
survived the 36 hole cut on a typically demanding Carnoustie course.
Fowler was
impressive over the opening two rounds with back to back scores of 69 to be
6-under heading to the weekend and part of a five way tie for third just one
off the lead.
With 11
birdies and an eagle on Thursday and Friday, Fowler looked in rare form but
scoring opportunities proved harder to come by on the weekend and he managed
just five birdies over the closing 36 holes.
It was
Fowler’s fourth top-10 in the Major in seven tries, his best result an outright sixth at Turnberry in 2012.
After three
solid rounds Mike Harwood will also be disappointed with his finish as he
notched a Sunday 79 to fall 24 places down the leaderboard.
Harwood, who
has been playing consistent golf all season in Europe, was eventually T54 at
8-over for the week.
Craig Parrry,
who came close at The Open when it was played at Carnousite in 1999, missed the
weekend’s action as did Peter O’Malley and qualifier Guy Wall.
