After graduating
from the Web.com Tour in 2015 Rhein Gibson has struggled to find his best form
but will be looking to continue a recent turnaround when he plays the Web
Tour’s Ellie Mae Classic at TPC Stonebrae this week.
Beginning
at the Barracuda Championship three weeks ago, Gibson has posted his two best
PGA TOUR results of the year and been part of a play-off on the Web.com Tour.
A solid
performance at last week’s Canadian Open, where he finished T32, and a T6
finish at this tournament last season will see him tee up with some confidence
as he battles to regain playing rights for the 2017 season.
At 196th
on the FedEx Cup standings the Lismore native is unlikely to play his way into
the top-125 on the main tour this late in the season but at 73rd on
the Web.com money list, a top-25 finish isn’t out of the question.
Even if he
doesn’t climb that high Gibson will want to retain a place in the top-75 who
are eligible for the upcoming Finals Series which will award cards for next
year.
With only
those ranked 126-200 on the FedEx Cup list eligible to play the four tournament
Series there is no guarantees Gibson will hold his place in the standings and a
top-75 place on the secondary Tour would be a good cushion.
Gibson is
one of six Australians to take their place in the field this week, Oliver Goss
electing not to play while Scott Gardiner is on the alternates list.
Peter
Lonard, Steve Allan, Mathew Goggin, Brett Drewitt and Bryden Macpherson are the
others in the field, all needing to play well as the season draws to a close.
Only
Gibson, Oliver Goss and Brett Drewitt are inside the top-100 in earnings with
four full field events remaining before the Finals Series, only Drewitt and
Gibson inside the top-75.
The top-75
will be eligible to play the Finals Series while only the top-100 will retain
Web.com Tour status for 2017.
