A superb Saturday round of 66 saw Jones head to the final day just four shots off the pace and looking a genuine contender but a rollercoaster Sunday meant he was unable to make any headway.
Despite making five birdies in the final round Jones offset the good work with three bogeys and a double to post an even par 71 and finish T7 at 9-under and five behind the winner.
Two shots further back was the consistent Brad Kennedy whose 7-under effort over the four days saw him finish T11, one shot and seven places better than New Zealand’s Michael Hendry.
While Jones is the only Australasian to have won in Japan in 2016 both Hendry and Kennedy have been impressive with a string of top five finishes between them.
Hendry currently sits seventh on the money list with Kennedy ninth.
Eight Australians teed up at the Bridgestone Open with seven going on to make the cut, Won Joon Lee the only one not to play the weekend.
Matt Griffin finished T33 at 4-under for the week while Scott Strange and Adam Bland were a shot further back and T38.
Kurt Barnes was the last of the Australasians to qualify for the weekend, his 2-over tally good for T57.
