Western Australia’s Curtis Luck this week enters the biggest tournament of his career and the Number 1 ranked amateur in the world is not at all daunted by The Masters hype.
Luck played his way in to the first Major of the season by winning the US Amateur title in August last year in dominant fashion, followed by a spectacular come from behind win in the Asian Pacific Amateur Championship in October.
The 20-year-old is preparing for The Masters to the best of his ability having arrived at Augusta National Golf Club last Wednesday and shared his first look at the prestigious course with just a few Members.
“I was a little nervous being here, even though no one was around and only a few foursomes of members were on the golf course,” Luck said.
“I played the first nine and chipped a few balls here and there. Then I played one back on the second nine. Thursday and Friday I did pretty much the same thing.”
He won’t be short on tips for the 18 holes this coming week having played practice rounds in the last few days with Jason Day, Adam Scott and one of The Masters favourite’s Rory McIlroy.
“I had gotten in a lot of my preparation the first few days I was here, so I was able to enjoy my time with Jason, Adam and Rory.
“They are also such nice guys. More than anything else, it was just relaxing walking around with them and being able to have a casual talk.
“They also pointed out a few things, a few pin locations to be wary of, a few putts to try not to leave yourself. I also watched them a lot, to see how they did it. The lines they took off the tees are interesting.”
Although his practice sessions with three of the best golfers in the world have given the young amateur a wealth of knowledge, Luck’s game plan is simple, enjoy the week and have fun.
“My plan is just to have fun here this week, if I enjoy my time on the golf course, then the golf will come.
"The thing I am most excited about is teeing up and getting on that first hole Thursday and hitting some shots for real."
Luck has also been enjoying the revered traditions of The Masters week and spent a night this week in the Crows Nest with the four other amateurs competing this week.
“We stayed up relatively late, just chatting and getting to know one another, and then we went to bed,” Luck said. “Then I was up early for my game with Rory.”
He will, however, be staying in a rented house with his family just near the course in an effort to take a step back from the pressure of the week and enjoy himself away from the golf.
His family won’t be his only support in Augusta though, a busload of members from Luck’s home club in Cottesloe are all currently on route to support their hometown hero.
Luck’s trademark ponytail and full beard accompanies his #FearTheBeard #FearTheMane social media tags adds to the persona golf fans in Australia have come to enjoy from the youngster.
“There’s a group of 20 or 30 Cottesloe members coming over, actually a bunch of them are getting in tomorrow night, I’m sure there’ll be something coming out of the crowd for me during the tournament.
“I’ve definitely got support and I’ll have it back home as well which is very nice.”
