""Lonard, one of the most successful Australian players of his generation, turned 50 two weeks ago and will be among the players to watch at Royal Porthcawl Golf Club.

Lonard has produced some good results ion the Wb.com Tour n recent weeks and will be motivated to perform well this week as a good result will help him gain access to the rich US Champions Tour.

Six Australians are in the field for the tournament after Glenn Joyner survived pre-qualifying at the Machynys Peninsual course, David McKenzie advanced at Asburnham and Terry Price earned a place at Southerndown.

They are joined by European Senior Tour regulars Peter Fowler, Mike Harwood and Peter O’Malley for the fifth and final of the season’s over 50’s major tournaments.

Peter Fowler will start the week with the best record among the Australians as he makes his ninth appearance at the tournament.

The five-time European Senior Tour winner finished T9 in each of the last two appearances and has missed the cut just once, on debut in 2009.

Mike Harwood has played just one less than Fowler though his record is less impressive with three cuts made and a best finish of T23 in 2011.

However, the Victorian has showed some decent form in recent weeks with his best finish of the season coming earlier this month when T11 in Switzerland.

Peter O’Malley has also been a consistent performer in 2017 with his worst finish in three events T16.

Four of his nine tournaments rounds played have been in the 60’s and the links course at Royal Porthcawl will suit his style of play.

Price, Joyner and McKenzie will all tee off with some confidence having survived the Monday qualifying, Price and Joyner playing the event for the second time while McKenzie makes his debut.
