Western Australia’s Michael Sim has cashed in on a sponsor’s invitation to last week’s Web.com Tour event by finishing high enough to earn another start this week.
Sim is trying to resurrect a career derailed by injury in recent years and after Monday qualifying twice early in the season caught a break at the Digital Ally Open in Kansas.
A third round 62 at the Nicklaus GC at Lionsgate propelled Sim up the standings and his eventual T21 result was enough to gain access to this week’s Ellie Mae Classic in California.
Ironically, Sim is a former winner of this tournament, having lifted the trophy in 2009, but didn’t need to call on his past champion status to gain a tee time this week.
Sim is one of six Australians in this week’s field though leading Australian money winner Jamie Arnold has elected to take the week off.
Fellow Web.com regulars Steve Allan, Rhein Gibson and Mark Hensby are in the field while Nick Flanagan and Oliver Goss will also play, beneficiaries of the WGC event being played in Ohio.
With the majority of the PGA TOUR’s biggest stars playing the Bridgestone tournament, several Web.com players have been given the opportunity to play the opposite field Barracuda Championship.
That in turn means that many who are further down the Web.com Exemption category list are eligible to play in California and Goss and Flanagan are among that number this week.
While they will be looking to making the most of that opportunity it is Rhein Gibson who will be eager to get the week underway after two exceptional previous appearances at TPC Stonebrae.
The former PGA TOUR player was second here last year and T6 in 2015 and is no doubt relishing the chance to return to a course where he has never signed for a score higher than 68.
