The lightning fast greens at Quail Hollow have set up an interesting week for the field with only 24 handing in scorecards with a sub-par score.
Quail Hollow’s notorious 16th, 17th and 18th holes, dubbed the ‘Green Mile’ proved difficult in the opening round, yielding few scoring opportunities for the professionals competing in the final Major of the year.
It was a shaky start for Day when he made bogey on two of his first three holes before he was able to rally with two birdies and an eagle through the remainder of his front-9.
Two more bogeys and a birdie saw the former World Number 1 finish 1–under par and sit T15, just three shots off joint leaders Thorbjorn Olesen of Denmark and American Kevin Kisner on 4-under.
One further back on even par is Adam Scott; he too battled through an up and down round, just missing some early scoring opportunities on the front-9. He shot two birdies and two bogeys for his even par round of 71.
Fellow Queenslander Scott Hend stumbled slightly on the back-9 with three bogeys but remains in the hunt at just 1-over 72.
The remaining Australasians in the field have a mountain of work ahead of them, Cameron Smith, Ryan Fox and Marc Leishman all had a tough time carding 4-over 75.
Danny Lee is 5-over, Rod Pampling 6-over and PGA Professional Stuart Deane sees them all at 13-over par.
Adam Scott will get the Australia and New Zealand contingent underway for round two tonight at 9:55pm AEST, the live broadcast begins on Fox Sports Australia at 3am AEST Saturday morning.
