Hend seeking presidential opportunity in Fiji

Queenslander Scott Hend has travelled to the Fiji International in search of a place on the International Team for The President’s Cup.

""Ranked 93rd in the Official World Golf Rankings, Hend is currently 22nd on the International Team standings but hopes a good week in Fiji will boost him upwards.

“It was unfortunate last week I missed the cut by a shot at the PGA. Maybe if I had made the cut I could have got some more World Ranking points and got further up the ladder,” said Hend.

“Pricey (International Team Captain Nick Price) said I would possibly be a captain’s pick if I showed some form and got up there a little bit more.

“So this week if I could put in a good performance here and then go onto the next couple of weeks and show some form, I could be in for a Captain’s pick in the team.”

Hend’s missed cut at the PGA Championship follows a season of mixed results but he hopes to change that at the Fiji International.

“It’s been a funny year, I haven’t played as well as I would have liked to in the Majors but it is steep learning curve and you learn every time you turn up to one of those things,” added Hend.

“Other than that I tried to change my schedule a little bit and play a little bit less and I don’t think it worked so I’m going to go back to what I have been doing for 20 years and play a lot of golf.

“I seem to play a lot better the more I play so that’s why I’m here this week and hopefully it pays off.”

With Mike Weir, an Assistant Captain to Nick Price, also playing in Fiji this week it’s a chance for Hend to show his prodigious talent to another involved in the team selection process.

“Mike Weir is here and he is one of the Vice Captains or Assistants to Nick Price. I’m guessing he’s going to have a bit of a look out, seeing who is playing well and what possibilities could become available.

“To play well with one of those guys here is very important.”

Scott Hend tees off at the Fiji International on Thursday at 7.25am playing alongside Angel Cabrera and Michael Hendry.
