Two eagles and four birdies in the final round have rocketed Cameron Smith to top Australasian honours and a top 10 finish at the Wyndham Championship in North Carolina.
Two eagles and four birdies in the final round have rocketed Cameron Smith to top Australasian honours and a top 10 finish at the Wyndham Championship in North Carolina.
Smith began the day outside the top 20 but started with a hole out from the fairway for eagle at the first then stayed hot on his way to a second 7-under 63 for the week and a T7 result.
A bogey at the second only served to inspire the Queenslander who added a second eagle at the par-5 fifth and four more birdies on his way to the clubhouse.
The final full field event of the season was an important week for several Australians as eligibility for next year’s Tour and places in the Web.com Finals were all on the line.
Geoff Ogilvy was the 125th ranked player at the start of the week and needed to play well to ensure a job next year though an opening even par 70 didn’t help his cause in a low scoring tournament.
But the 2006 US Open winner fought back with two rounds of 66 to get inside the top 25 then turned on an exhibition over the opening nine holes of the final day.
Ogilvy went out in 6-under 29 but struggled on the inward half with two double bogeys against a lone birdie.
His final round 67 lifted him to T16 but, more importantly 116th on the FedEx Cup standings and fully exempt for next year.
Steven Bowditch, Steve Alker and Tim Wilkinson were the other of the 14 Australasians in the field to make the cut, Wilkinson next best behind Smith and finishing the year 156th in the FedEx Cup.
That will give the New Zealander access to the four tournament Web.com Finals Series, fellow Kiwi Steve Alker also making the grade at 186th in the final standings.
While making just his second cut of the year was a minor victory for Bowditch it will be his last chance on the PGA TOUR for the foreseeable future as his exemption for winning the 2015 Byron Nelson tournament has now expired.
As a two time PGA TOUR winner he does get full access to the Web.com Tour and it seems likely he will take that option as he tries to rebuild his game.
Aaron Baddeley and Stuart Appleby made the 36-hole cut but not the 54-hole cut, Appleby doing enough in recent weeks to finish in the 126-200 bracket that will see him gain a start in the Web.com Finals.
Matt Jones and Cameron Percy will have limited access to the Tour again in 2018 as they finished in the 126-150 bracket while Brett Drewitt booked a place in the Finals Series by maintaining his place in the top 200.
Ryan Ruffels’ last ditch attempt to earn access to the Web.com Series came up short with rounds of 77-72, the teen now facing a return trip to the secondary Tour Qualifying School in December.
Six Australians are among the 125 to qualify for the first event upcoming FedEx Cup playoffs next week with Marc Leishman (14th), Cameron Smith (40th), Jason Day (49th), Rod Pampling (70th) and Geoff Ogilvy (116th) all in the field for the Northern Trust tournament in New York.
Adam Scott (62nd) is eligible for the first event but will sit out as his wife is expecting the couple’s second child, that decision meaning he won’t play again till the Presidents Cup as he won’t qualify for the final three events.
