A breakthrough victory on the Ladbrokes PGA Pro-Am Series for rookie Professional Blake Proverbs, who fired a 7-under par 64 to claim the 2017 Southport Pro-am.

""Proverbs played near flawless golf around the difficult Southport layout to win by two shots from Professional Ewan Porter who fired a 5-under 66 to finish in outright second place.

“It’s fantastic to get my first Pro-Am win, especially here at Southport," said Proverbs.

“This will give me a boost of confidence heading into the bigger events at the end of the year.

“I had great group today, my playing partners were fantastic they kept me really relaxed. They told me at the beginning of the round that they had played with the winner three years ago, maybe it was a good omen for me.

“The course is tight, you’ve got to keep the ball in play off the tee. My strategy was to hit a lot of 3 woods and 3 irons off the tee, I managed to stick to my game plan and it certainly has paid off."

Brisbane based Professional Proverbs round included nine birdies coming at the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 5th, 8th and 9th with just one bogey coming at the par 4, 3rd hole to close out the front-9 in 32.

Further birdies on the 10th, 11th, 12th and 17th holes, with just one bogey on the par 4, 15th hole threatened to derail his round but still finished the back-9 in 32.

“I made just the two bogeys for the round; both times I just missed the green on the wrong side of the pin and short sided myself, I just couldn’t get the ball up and down to save my par," Proverbs added.

Currently based on the Sunshine Coast Professional Ewan Porter fired 5-under 66 to finish outright second place in blustery afternoon conditions.

“The wind made things difficult this afternoon with a couple of tight pins and fast greens, you had to be really accurate with your approach shots to have a chance of making birdies," said Porter.

“Today was probably one of the best ball striking days I’ve ever had. My iron shots into the green were mostly all inside eight to ten feet, which gave me a lot of birdie opportunities."

Porter’s round included seven birdies coming at the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 9th, 11th and 13th and just two bogeys on the 4th and 16th holes.

“It’s been a while since I have been in contention to win an event, I have to say I felt really nervous coming down the home stretch, but it was a nice feeling to play well again," added Porter.

Finishing in a tie for third position was the inform Daniel McGraw and Scott Arnold who both shot rounds of 3-under par 68.

The next event on Ladbrokes PGA Pro-Am Series schedule will be the Australian 4 Ball Teams Championship to be played 21st – 24th November 2018 at the Glades Golf Club.
