Saturday saw the final round of the Gordon Refrigeration SA Senior PGA Championship and it was a true legend in Peter Fowler who overcame the round one leader Tim Elliott at Blue Lake Public Links to take the Championship.

The final round was much like Friday’s opening round which saw blustery conditions test the field and when Fowler made several birdies on the front nine to catch Elliott by the 9th hole, the onlookers knew it was a matter of time before Fowler ran away with it. And that he did despite a bogey on the final hole.

Fowler posted a final round 1-under 69 following his opening 67 which was enough to take the Championship by two shots and makes it a trio of victories in the SA Senior PGA Championship in the past six years for Fowler who will now head to the Japanese Senior Tour in a week to begin the 2017 senior tour there.

“I really enjoyed this week here at Blue Lake,” said Fowler.

“The golf course is just superb and it’s a wonderful event which the club and council make happen."

Victorian Lucien Tinkler posted the equal low round of the event on Saturday, matching Tim Elliott’s first round course record of 65 to shoot up the leader board and finish in a tie for second with Michael Harwood who carded a 68 on Saturday.

Despite a four-over-par 74 on Saturday, Elliott did enough to secure the massive reward which comes along with leading the Legends Tour Order of Merit following the tournament.

Elliott has managed a consistent year and with the result at Blue Lake, Elliott is now invited to compete in the US Senior PGA Championship at Trump National in Washington D.C next month.

“It was a disappointing day today but I am extremely fortunate to have this opportunity to play in the US Senior PGA Championship,” said Elliott who will return to Victoria to enjoy some down time and prepare for America.

Tournament host Bill Burley said it was a very successful event and is wrapped to have so much support from the local Mt Gambier community and the support of City of Mt Gambier Council has been very much appreciated.

“It’s a huge event for the club but also for the city of Mt Gambier,” said golf club Manager Burley who has hosted the tournament for the past three years and is hopeful of keeping the Championship in the future.
