A gutsy four-foot par putt at the 72nd hole has seen Andrew Dodt swell the Australian numbers at Royal Birkdale to 11 after grabbing one of three available spots at the Scottish Open.
The two-time European Tour winner will make his major championship debut in England instead of holidaying in New York with his wife as previously planned.
Dodt began the final round with a share of the lead at Dundonald Links and was alone at the top in the early stages after making two birdies in his first four holes.
But while he lost momentum with three dropped shots in four holes after the turn he snared a fabulous consolation prize and will make his major debut next week.
Dodt will have left the course Sunday with mixed feelings as will Ryan Fox who endured a roller coaster final round.
The long hitting Kiwi posted his third top 10 in as many weeks though did it in adventurous fashion including a bizarre par at the 11th hole.
After hitting his tee shot into some gorse bushes and re-loading, Fox promptly holed out with his provisional for a remarkable three.
The par kickstarted a run of two birdies in the next three holes but a second lost ball off the 16th tee ended his chances.
Despite some loose play over the closing holes Fox still hung on to finish T4 and must be pleased with most facets of his game heading to Birkdale.
Fox and Dodt were the standout performers in Scotland with Adam Scott one of several whose chances drowned in horrendous weather during Saturday’s third round.
Continuing his experiment with playing the week before each of the 2017 majors, Scott opened with encouraging rounds of 69-71 to be inside the top 15 and poised for a weekend charge.
But rain and wind lashed the Dundonald course on day three and Scott limped to a disappointing 78 to freefall down the leaderboard to T51.
A final round 68 was a solid comeback and will see Scott head to Birdkdale with some confidence in his game, his 2-under 72 hole total good for a T35 finish.
Sam Brazel and Jason Scrivener matched Scott’s total while Scott Hend, Brett Rumford, Marcus Fraser and Wade Ormsby all missed the 36 hole cut.
