Richard Backwell and Glenn Joyner have taken out the converted QLD PGA Foursomes Championship Sanctuary Cove Golf and Country Club and after carding rounds of 72-69 for a one over par total, and a two shot victory.

The QLD PGA Foursomes Championship has an exceptional honour role with previous winners such as Ian Baker Finch and Jeff Woodland, Jeff Senior and Peter McWhinney, Luke Arnott and Scott Hend as well as Ryan Haller and Wayne Perske just to name a few. The 2019 field was no different with a wonderful mix of PGA Professionals from Peter Senior, Michael Sim and Steven Jeffress to some of the most well respected vocational members of the PGA in Gary Edwin, Len Beck, Denis Brosnan and Ian Triggs.

Backwell, who has come off a win in the Samoa Senior Open, teamed up with good friend Victorian Glenn Joyner to become the first team each over the age of 50 to take out the championship.

“We don’t have too many opportunities to play in teams events and therefore we were really looking forward to the event and as a result, the day became an extremely memorable one” said Joyner.

“Foursomes is a really tough game given it is hard to get any momentum only hitting every second shot, though we complimented each other really well during both rounds and can’t say enough as to how proud we are to win”.

The lowest round of the day went to Steven Jeffress and Ben Campbell who shot 66 in the afternoon round to finish outright second position two shots back.

Both Backwell and Joyner also won the QLD PGA Seniors Championship receiving a $500 bonus thanks to long term PGA sponsors Tony Hollands Funerals. Also receiving a $500 bonus was the pairing of Charles Wright and Christopher Crooks with the pair taking out the QLD PGA Trainee Foursomes Championship. Both in their final year of their PGA Traineeship, their scores of 79-71 were good enough for a four shot victory.

“The PGA Trainees have received great support from Tony Hollands over the years and this is further evidence of his support of PGA Professionals and the PGA Trainee Program” said Wright who in 2019 is the QLD PGA Trainee Captain.

The Ladbrokes PGA Pro-Am Series now moved north to the Sunshine Coast for the Property Today & Innovative Planning Solutions Headland Pro-Am on Wednesday while the Ladbrokes PGA Legends Tour kicks off it’s QLD Swing at the Tropical Auto Group Yeppoon Legends Pro-Am starting Thursday.
