The final round of the Holden NZ PGA Championship is underway this morning at Remuera Golf Club in Auckland.
A sunny morning has greeted players and with the wind down,
compared to yesterday, we are expecting to see plenty of low scores.
At the start of the day Matthew Millar has a two shot lead
over New Zealander Josh Geary.
Rookie Professionals Geoff Drakeford and Jordan Zunic are
tied third and three shots behind Millar.
It’s been an impressive performance from Zunic who
pre-qualified for the Holden NZ PGA Championship.
As well as a win he is also chasing a place in the field for
the BMW NZ Open next week. The top-two finishers from inside the top-10 this
week, who aren’t already exempt, will gain a place in Queenstown.
Lurking dangerously on the leaderboard is New Zealander Ryan
Fox who snatched the Coca-Cola Queensland PGA Championship from Millar two
weeks ago with two consecutive eagles in the last three holes.
It will be another exciting finish at Remuera Golf Club
today with two par-5’s in the final three holes providing plenty of
opportunities for eagles and birdies.
Meet the contenders:
Ryan Fox (69, 68, 66):
An Auckland local, Fox has plenty of experience playing at the Remuera Golf
Club. A tight layout, it isn’t a course which would traditionally suit the big
hitter but his local knowledge could help him prevail. Fox is also in good form
having won the Coca-Cola Queensland PGA Championship, the last tournament on
the PGA Tour of Australasia.
Kristopher Mueck (64,
68, 70): Victorian Mueck got off to a hot start at the Holden NZ PGA
Championship firing a course record equalling round on Thursday. Since then he
has played some impressive and steady golf to ensure he remains in the hunt. To
chase down his first victory on the PGA Tour of Australasia he will need to go
low today.
Jordan Zunic (67, 66,
69): A rookie Professional Zunic earned his place in the field this week
via pre-qualifying on Monday. Somewhat of an unknown quantity, this is just Zunic’s
second tournament as a Professional on the PGA Tour of Australasia. He missed
the cut at the Oates Vic Open but this week is making his presence on Tour felt.
He will be looking to get off to a fast start today at the 1st, a
hole he has birdied each day this week.
Geoff Drakeford (70,
65, 67): Drakeford has burst onto the Tour and has earned a reputation as
one of the biggest hitters out here. He has demonstrated that this week, being
8-under the card on the par-5’s at Remuera Golf Club. If he can stay within
touch of the lead coming into the home straight he has a good chance to snatch victory
with the 17th and 18th being par-5’s and providing him a
huge opportunity for eagle. The other highlight of Drakeford’s week was almost
acing the par-3 3rd hole in the second round.
Josh Geary (66, 66,
69): The leading New Zealander Geary is going to have the full support of a
home crowd. A proven winner Geary will be drawing on his experience from the
2013 WA Open Championship today as he searches for his first major victory on
home soil. The closing three holes, which feature two par-5’s, will also play
into Geary’s hands. This week he had played the par-5’s in 12-under the card
and the last two specifically in 5-under the card.
Matthew Millar (68,
67, 64): 38-year-old Millar is the inform player in the field with three
top-10 finishes in three starts on the PGA Tour of Australasia this year. After
coming so close to winning the QLD PGA Championship two weeks ago he will be a
sentimental favourite to take out the title today. He has been playing some
stunning golf, being bogey free for the tournament and shooting a course record
equalling round yesterday it could be said he deserves to win the most today.
