Smith’s meteoric rise to PGA TOUR victory

Queenslander Cameron Smith and his teammate, Jonas Blixt of Sweden, have won the Zurich Classic on the PGA TOUR overnight.

Queenslander Cameron Smith and his teammate, Jonas Blixt of Sweden, have won the Zurich Classic on the PGA TOUR overnight.

"CameronEnding regulation play tied with the team of Kevin Kisner and Scott Brown, it was a nervous night with the playoff held on Monday morning.

It took four extra holes for Smith and Blixt to emerge victorious with it being the Queenslander’s first win on the PGA TOUR and his team mate’s third.

“I’ve been playing well for awhile now the last few months and everything needed to come together to get a relaxed week I think with Jonas,” said Smith, who came into the tournament fresh from a T6 finish at the Valero Texas Open.

“It really freed me up and freed Jonas up, as well, I think and we both played out of our skin. It was really good.

“I loved it (the teams format). We came in here with a pretty chilled-out attitude and just tried to have fun.

“We played a practice round on Tuesday. We were both striking the ball really well. I was kind of thinking to myself, we’re going to win this thing, and never really thought it would happen,” added Smith, with his team being bogey free for the entire tournament.

“Our ball-striking, especially in the foursomes, when it’s hard to get momentum, was pretty good, and our scrambling, as well, when we did miss a shot was — we didn’t make a bogey all week, so it was solid.”

Smith was emotional after the win, showing the enormity of what he has achieved in the short time he has been a Professional.

“To have a putt to win on the PGA TOUR when you’ve been working towards it your whole life, is a completely different feeling. It felt like the longest two-and-a-half-foot putt I’ve ever hit,” added Smith.

Turning Pro in 2013, Smith honed his craft as an amateur and rookie Pro on his home tour; the ISPS HANDA PGA Tour of Australasia.

Smith earned status on the Asian Tour in 2014 and quickly showed his talent. He finished 5th on the Order of Merit thanks to seven top-10 finishes but it was the CIMB Classic which really launched his career.

Finishing tied 5th in the PGA TOUR co-sanctioned tournament, he parlayed that into a start the next week at the Sanderson Farms Championship before earning a number of sponsor invites onto the PGA TOUR in the 2014 / 2015 season.

Smith introduced himself to the world in June 2015 when he qualified for the U.S. Open and finished T4 in his Major debut. This secured his PGA TOUR card and he has forged his career in the U.S. since then.

On home soil Smith has been close to breaking through for a win, last year finishing runner-up alongside Ashley Hall at the Emirates Australian Open after Jordan Spieth defeated the pair in a playoff. He also finished 5th at the European Tour co-sanctioned 2015 Australian PGA Championship in his home state.

It has been a meteoric rise for the 23-year-old, but one that comes as no surprise to anyone who has worked with or watched Smith.

He is a prodigious talent who is renowned for his excellent putting stroke, calmness under pressure and friendly laid back nature.

Thanks to his win at the Zurich Classic, Smith has now secured his status on the PGA TOUR for the next two seasons and ensures him a start at THE PLAYERS Championship.

Smith’s first win on the PGA TOUR comes in his 53rd PGA TOUR start at the age of 23 years, 8 months and 13 days, one day older than Adam Scott when he won THE PLAYERS in 2004).

By comparison, Jason Day is the youngest Aussie to win on the PGA TOUR, doing so at 22 years, 6 months and 11 days at the 2010 AT&T Byron Nelson.
