A second round of 64 catapulted Jason Norris to his best European Tour finish since winning last year’s Fiji International.
Norris produced nine birdies against a lone bogey on Friday at the Volvo China Open on his way to a 9-under 72-hole total and a T27 result.
He has battled injury and form issues since claiming the title at Natadola Bay but backed up his day two fireworks with solid weekend scores of 70-71 in a confidence boosting performance just weeks out from a run of some of Europe’s richest events.
Jason Scrivener took top Australian honours in a low scoring week at the Topwin Golf and Country Club, the only Australian to finish double digits under par claiming a share of 20th place at 11-under the card.
Like Norris, it was Scrivener’s best result of 2018 though the West Australian will be somewhat disappointed with his weekend play.
Opening scores of 67-69 had the 27-year-old sharing second place at just one off the pace and while he played good golf over the final two rounds, he couldn’t keep pace with the hot scoring.
While he was under par on both Saturday and Sunday so, too, were the bulk of the field and his 2-under Sunday 70 actually saw him slip eight places down the standings.
Andrew Dodt was a model of consistency over the course of the four days with scores of 69-72-69-69 seeing him finish alongside Norris at 9-under, Marcus Fraser a shot further back and T32 after a strong weekend showing.
Ryan Fox was the last of the Australasians to make the cut; the New Zealander was 7-under for the week and T37.
Eight Australians failed to qualify for the weekend, Wade Ormsby coming within a single stroke after 69-75 left him even par and one outside the required number.
Adam Bland was a shot further back while Scott Hend was unable to recover from an opening 77 and missed by four.
Sam Brazel and Brett Rumford both had disastrous Friday rounds, Brazel with 78 and Rumford 77, David Gleeson struggling both days to finish 7-over.
Daniel Nisbet and Lucas Herbert rounded out the Australian challenge though neither had their best stuff for the week and missed by nine and 11 shots respectively.
