Just seven players finished the week under par with only three posting a red number on Sunday, David Toms making a clutch par save at 17 to win by a single shot ahead of Jerry Kelly, Tim Petrovic and Miguel Angel Jimenez and claim the first Champions Tour title of his career.
Yet to miss a cut on the US seniors tour this year, the Victorian made three bogeys in his final round of 2-over 72 but finished the year’s second major in style with a birdie at the par-4 finishing hole to lead the Australasian contingent.
Despite hitting just eight of 18 greens in regulation on the final day McKenzie (9-over) made a number of crucial par-saves with the flatstick, finishing the week 16th for strokes gained in putting.
It makes for an ideal build-up to the Senior Open at St Andrews at the end of the month having finished top-10 at Royal Porthcawl last year.
Like McKenzie, Peter Fowler (14-over) was consistent over the opening three rounds but after making birdie at the par-5 third hole on Sunday stumbled with a triple bogey six at the par-3 fourth, eventually posting a final round of 76 to finish in a tie for 49th.
Kiwi Grant Waite was the only other Australasian in the field and struggled over the weekend to finish in 56th position at 18-over par.
There is no event on the Champions Tour this week with the European Staysure senior tour to resume at the Swiss Seniors Open.
