When Stuart Appleby shot 59 in the final round of the Greenbrier Classic in 2010 to beat Jeff Overton by a single shot he was playing the PGA Tour for an 11th straight week.

""When Appleby tees it up in the first round of the A Military Tribute at The Greenbrier in one of the opening groups on Thursday evening AEST it will be just his 12th start on the top tier US Tour since he missed the cut at the same event 12 months ago.

Fresh from a bit of snake-wrangling (check his Instagram page) and a tie for 12th in his most recent start at the Fed Ex St Jude Classic, Appleby will have to dig deep into the memory banks to rekindle some positivity at the CB MacDonald and Seth Raynor classic.

Since his history-making performance eight years ago that yielded the new course record (beating none other than former Greenbrier prop emeritus Sam Snead) and 72-hole scoring record that still stands, the 47-year-old has failed to make the cut in each of his past five appearances at The Greenbrier.

Another Aussie who can channel positive vibes from a return to West Virginia is New South Welshman Matt Jones.

Currently 150th in the FedEx Cup, Jones and Steven Bowditch were runners-up in this event in 2013, Jones shooting 66 in the opening round last year before dropping back in the field over the course of the weekend.

With the likes of Phil Mickelson, Bubba Watson, Webb Simpson and Tony Finau in the field and having finished top 20 in three of his past six starts, it could be the perfect week for Jones to bank some crucial FedEx Cup points and move towards a spot inside the top 125 on the money list.

Kiwi Danny Lee was the 2015 champion at The Greenbrier and is in the field this week along with Bowditch, Robert Allenby, Geoff Ogilvy and Cameron Percy.
