Curtis Luck’s dreams of a 2019 PGA Tour card remain alive after the West Australian posted his second top-10 finish of the Web.com Tour season just when he needed it the most.
At the start of the week Luck sat in 83rd position and needing a strong result to play his way into the Web.com Tour Finals and the opportunity to secure one of the 25 PGA Tour cards that will be on offer at the completion of the four-event finals series.
No Australians were able to snare one of the 25 cards handed out for the top-25 finishers at the end of the regular season meaning a contingent of four Australians will commence their quest for a coveted tour card at next week’s Nationwide Children’s Hospital Championship in Columbus, Ohio.
Sydney’s Jamie Arnold was sitting inside the top 75 cutoff for the finals at the start of the week but a disappointing opening round of 77 in the WinCo Foods Portland Open saw him miss the cut and drop seven spots to 80th in the standings.
The news was far more positive for Luck who began the final round projected to move up to 60th but had to overcome a mid-round meltdown to stay there.
Having made birdie at the opening two holes, the 22-year-old dropped a shot at the third and three-putted both the fifth and seventh holes to be 1-over on his round.
That’s where he stayed until a miraculous hole-out at the par-5 11th delivered a much-needed eagle that may not have just rescued his round but his entire season.
He followed that up with a birdie at the par-4 13th to move into the top five on the leaderboard and parred his way in to end the week tied for sixth, six shots behind winner and Order of Merit champion Sungjae Im of Korea.
Luck has already recorded a top-five finish on the PGA Tour in the 2017 Quicken Loans National and if his form continues over the Web.com Tour Finals he’ll be in excellent position to add to his 11 PGA Tour starts to date.
Despite his victory at the Nashville Golf Open, a top-25 finish this week wasn’t enough to see Cameron Davis move into the top 25, finishing the regular season 34th on the moneylist and heading to the Web.com Tour Finals.
Like Luck, Davis turned at 1-over on Sunday before going on a run of five birdies in the space of seven holes to start the back nine to post a 3-under par round of 68.
New Zealand’s Tim Wilkinson enjoyed a good week finishing tied for 16th but it wasn’t enough to advance to the finals, ending the regular season 91st on the standings.
Despite missing the cut in Portland, Rhein Gibson and Brett Drewitt have both done enough to advance to the finals.
On the Mackenzie Tour in Canada, Brett Coletta was the best of the Aussies in action, finishing tied for 30th in the Players Cup in Winnipeg won by Tyler McCumber.
Ruben Sondjaja opened with a 67 but struggled to make up ground over the weekend to finish tied for 48th while Mat Goggin missed the cut despite being 4-under through his two rounds.
