Jordan Zunic has arrived in New Caledonia the in-form player
of the South Pacific Open Championship.
The New South Welshman is the most recent ISPS HANDA PGA
Tour of Australasia champion, having won the Tour’s last tournament; the
Northern Territory PGA Championship.
After taking his first look at the Tina Golf Course, Zunic likes
his chances on the layout which he says bears similarities to Palmerston Golf
Course where he was recently victorious.
"I find the grass fairly similar to what we played in
Darwin, grainy sort of stuff. So after having a good result in Darwin I think
it suits the way I play," said Zunic, who in just two years as a Pro has
recorded two Tour victories.
"There is a bit more wind to deal with here than what we had
in Darwin, but I have never really had too much trouble with that."
"I feel like if I build a good strategy this week, strike
the ball well and execute my shots, I will be right up there and able to give
it another shake."
Zunic feels comfortable when he is a front runner; he won
the Northern Territory PGA Championship wire-to-wire and is hoping to get off
to a hot start in tomorrow’s first round.
"During my career, I have always performed well after I have
had a good first round. Your chances go up a lot when you do start with a good
round," added Zunic.
"I am off early tomorrow so hopefully I can get out there and
post a decent score. I want to start well and build from there."
A globetrotter, Zunic has spent 2016 traversing the world,
seizing the opportunity to compete in tournaments in countries as far flung as
Korea, Thailand, America, Austria, Australia, New Zealand and now New
Caledonia.
Making his first trip to the South Pacific paradise, Zunic
is impressed with his experience so far.
"I have never been to Noumea before and it’s classified as
such a beautiful island so it was a no brainer for me, I just wanted to come
and see it for myself," added Zunic, who is looking to play tourist as well as
golf this week.
"It’s definitely lived up to expectations so far. It’s an absolutely
stunning place, I have loved every minute. Some of those views out on the golf
course today were outstanding."
"I’m very excited to play this week and see a bit of Noumea
while I am here too. I will see what’s around and see if the other guys want to
go and do anything touristy because we may as well take advantage of being in a
stunning place."
The South Pacific Open Championship tees off on
Wednesday 21 September with the champion to be decided on Saturday 24
September. Played for $140,000 the South Pacific Open Championship also
attracts Official World Golf Ranking points.
