As squally conditions continued to plagued Sydney’s western suburbs, young gun amateur Ben Eccles dominated the day to cruise to the top of the leaderboard and heads into the final round with a four shot lead.
Firing a round of 6-under 66, with seven birdies and a lone bogey, Eccles appeared comfortable and unfazed by the tough weather conditions that challenged many on course today.
"I’m thrilled. I knew it was going to be pretty tough today, it was a long day. Conditions were tough this afternoon and I was able to execute and hole a few putts. I’m really happy," said Eccles
"Nothing’s going to change tomorrow, I’m going to try and relax and see if I can shoot a good number and hopefully get the job done."
Former NSW Open champion Peter Lonard is tied for second along with fellow New South Welshman, Clayton Bridges, both on 15-under.
"I played alright, I didn’t hit the ball very well early on, then I holed a chip and worked out where the ball was going and played ok towards the end. I didn’t drive it very well but luckily on this course you don’t have to drive it straight; you just have to keep the ball on the fairways," said Lonard.
Bridges was satisfied with his round and happy that he could get the ball moving well.
"I was really happy to get the ball rolling especially with the five birdies in a row on the end of the front nine. I had a couple of loose shots, but overall I’m pretty happy with my round," said Bridges.
The cut was made at 3-under par with 65 players making it to the weekend.
